![]() Polar bear Iorek Byrnison in BBC/HBO's 'His Dark Materials' BBC Pictures There is a short moment of confusion at first as to who is speaking. ![]() Quite often, the daemons stand out-of-frame, rendered only on the soundtrack as they speak to their designated person. ![]() In a universe where everyone has a daemon, only one or two at a time appear onscreen, even in the less crowded scenes. However, they do seem to hold a backseat position in this first episode. Judging only from the first episode, the daemons on view look quite incredible, especially Lord Asriel’s snow leopard daemon and when Pantalaimon, Lyra’s daemon, shapeshifts. A daemon shape-shifts until the person comes to adulthood, when it attains its definite form. There are also the “daemons,” the creatures that embody a person’s soul and inner self in the form of an animal. So far, in the first episode, this alternate universe consists of views of Oxford, U.K., with numerous blimps flying in its grey skyline. Pullman’s intricate alternate universe, which looks like ours but isn’t quite, had to be translated into images. ![]() Much of the budget for BBC/HBO’s His Dark Materials has gone into the special effects.
