![]() Kahlen was interesting, strong and dynamic. The protagonist, Kahlen, is 80 years in to her 100 year sentence to serve the Ocean when she meets a young man Akinli who tempts her to rebel against the Ocean’s edicts for the first time in her 80 years as Siren. The Ocean needs regular sacrifices of human life in order to continue to thrive and create the intricate ecosystem below Her waves. They must not ever let their voice be heard at any other time, and they must always submit to the Ocean’s call to sing. In exchange for their lives, Sirens are indentured to sing ships to their demise for 100 years. Sirens are young women, never wives or mothers, who are spared from death at sea by the personified Ocean. I believed in the mythology that Cass built about the Sirens, and felt immersed in the tension between the Sirens and the Ocean. The world-building was the strength of this book. ![]() ![]() I’m impressed that this was her first novel. ![]() I believe I read somewhere that Cass first self-published this book (possibly online?) before it was picked up by a bigger publishing company. ![]()
